Bullet Heaven: What the Genre Is (and How It Differs From Bullet Hell)
Updated
A bullet heaven is a game where you auto-attack huge hordes of enemies and spend your attention on movement and upgrades. Steam made it an official tag in May 2026 and defines it as "the opposite of Bullet Hell; focus on upgrades while automatically attacking hordes of enemies." It is the same genre people also call survivors-like or Vampire Survivors-like.
Bullet hell vs bullet heaven
| Bullet hell | Bullet heaven | |
|---|---|---|
| Who fills the screen | The enemies' bullets | Your own attacks |
| What you do | Dodge precise patterns, aim and shoot | Move, collect XP, pick upgrades; weapons fire on their own |
| Main skill | Reflexes and pattern reading | Build choices and positioning in a crowd |
| Typical examples | Shoot-'em-ups like the Touhou series | Vampire Survivors, Brotato, Halls of Torment, Megabonk |
The name plays on that reversal. Vampire Survivors' own Steam description ends with "Be the bullet hell!", and Army of Ruin's says "you become the Bullet Hell".
The core loop
- Move — usually your only direct control. Attacks fire automatically.
- Collect XP dropped by the hundreds of enemies you kill.
- Level up and pick an upgrade: a new weapon, a stat boost, or a level for something you have. In Vampire Survivors you hold up to 6 weapons and 6 passives.
- Snowball until the screen is your attacks; combos (Vampire Survivors' evolutions, Megabonk's tome and weapon pairings) are the point.
- Survive a timer or beat a boss: Vampire Survivors stages run 15, 20 or 30 minutes before the Reaper arrives; Megabonk ends each map with a final boss.
- Spend meta-currency between runs on permanent unlocks.
Where the term comes from
- Vampire Survivors (poncle) entered early access in December 2021, released fully in late 2022 and won BAFTA Games Awards for Best Game and Game Design. Wikipedia calls it one of the first "bullet heaven" games.
- For years players argued over "survivors-like", "Vampire Survivors-like", "auto-shooter" and "bullet heaven".
- May 2026: Valve's Steam tag update made Bullet Heaven an official tag, reported by PC Gamer, The Verge, Polygon and GamingOnLinux. Steam has also run Bullet Heaven themed festivals.
Where to start
- Cheapest proper start: Vampire Survivors ($4.99 on Steam, free on phones).
- Free, in your browser: PokeBonk, a 3D Pokémon fan survivors-like.
- 3D with platforming: Megabonk.
- More picks with prices and ratings: games like Vampire Survivors and the mobile list.
FAQ
What is a bullet heaven game?
A game where your character attacks automatically while you move through huge hordes of enemies and choose upgrades, so the screen fills with your bullets instead of the enemy's. What is the difference between bullet hell and bullet heaven?
In a bullet hell (danmaku) shooter the enemies fill the screen with bullets and you dodge them. In a bullet heaven you are the one filling the screen: your weapons fire on their own and your job is to move, survive and pick upgrades.

Mostly yes. 'Survivors-like' and 'Vampire Survivors-like' name the same kind of game after the hit that popularised it. Steam settled on 'Bullet Heaven' as its official tag in May 2026.
